A Historical Comment: Today is the anniversary of the birth of George
Washington, who was probably our nation's truly greatest president.
When I was a child, it was still celebrated as a national holiday.

Support Builds for Oregon CCW Confidentiality: Sheriffs around Oregon
have been sending an unusual letter to holders of concealed weapons
permits with this message: If you don't want the public to know you've
got a permit, we'll try to help you out. The letter from the sheriffs
says newspapers and others are trying to get lists of people who have
concealed handgun permits, sparking a legal challenge that's pending
in the Oregon Court of Appeals. And as the appeals court mulls the
issue, Oregon lawmakers are pursuing legislation to take those records
completely out of public view by prohibiting their release under the
Oregon public records law. The bill to close those records has broad
support, with half of the members of the Legislature, both Democrats
and Republicans, signing on as co-sponsors… (Arguably, in
jurisdictions such as California, where issue of permits is
"discretionary," there is value to being able to evaluate who merits
the "privilege." I can think of no similar argument in a shall-issue
environment.)

Who Picked This Scenario?: Following publicized reports that the Army
National Guard was planning a military training exercise on the
streets of a rural Iowa town, the commanding officers have called off
the mock "invasion." The Guard had planned a four-day urban military
operation in tiny Arcadia, Iowa, population 443, sending troops to
take over the town and search door-to-door for a suspected weapons
dealer… Kots described the original operation to the Herald as set to
begin on Thursday, April 2, with reconnaissance and exploratory
patrols. On April 4 convoys were to be deployed from the armory in
Carroll to nearby Arcadia, where soldiers would knock on doors,
showing a picture of the invented "arms dealer." …

From Texas Gun Shops?: Across the border from McAllen, Texas, a war
has been raging in affluent Mexican neighborhoods, main streets and
shopping areas as cartels openly fire rocket-propelled grenade
launchers and assault rifles at law enforcement authorities… The
gunmen fired a variety of military-grade weapons, including grenades,
a 60 mm mortar and assorted small-arms ammunition… (So much for the
fiction that Mexican drug gangs would not be as violent if they could
not obtain firearms by straw purchases in American border states. As I
have said before, they have no trouble procuring weaponry from the
Mexican military.)

Mexican police say assailants hurled two grenades at a police station
in the southwestern beach town of Zihuatanejo, wounding one officer
and four civilians. The Guerrero state Public Safety Department says
men in an SUV threw the explosive devices at the station Saturday.
Three taxi drivers, a woman and a policeman were hurt. Grenade attacks
have become a fixture of Mexico's brutal drug violence. Last week,
five civilians and an officer were wounded in a grenade assault on a
police patrol in western Michoacan state. Mexican police say they are
outgunned by drug gangs that attack them every day.

"Russian Roulette" Killing – More Details: …Courtney L. Robinson and
Jason M. Brant, 22, were drunk and high on marijuana Sept. 6, 2008,
when they playfully pointed guns at each other at around 2 a.m. at a
home in the 800 block of East 30th Street, near South Park Avenue,
court documents indicate. Robinson knew his .45 caliber revolver had
two bullets in it, but fired it three times. Because no rounds were
fired the first two times, Robinson thought the next cylinder [sic]
would be empty, too… While there is no excuse for playing with a
loaded gun, Rosenbluth reminded the judge his client has cognitive
difficulties. After court, Rosenbluth said his client's IQ is 69…
(What a great combination – cognitive impairment, alcohol, marijuana,
an equally impaired friend and partially loaded firearms.)

The Vaunted Head Shot: This video clip credits a hair weave with
stopping a bullet, fired by an estranged boyfriend, from penetrating a
woman's skull. No mention is made of the caliber of the bullet but, in
objective analysis, the bullet in question may already have been
slowed by the rear window of the vehicle.
